'Cadillac' Williams, Kevin Turner highlight 2017 Alabama Sports Hall of Fame - AL.com
University of Alabama and NFL fullback Kevin Turner will be posthumously inducted into the ASHOF, after his death at 46 last March of the neurodegenerative disease ALS. The new 2017 members are Lee DeFore, Ken Donahue, Jim Goostree, Jeff Herrod, Todd Jones, Takeo Spikes and Carnell "Cadillac" Williams. Carnell Williams was Alabama's Mr. Football for the Etowah Blue Devils in 2000, an All-American running back and the SEC Special Teams Player of the Year for Auburn's undefeated 2004 team. After Turner was diagnosed with ALS, he created the Kevin Turner Foundation to bring attention to the disease, raise awareness about the seriousness of brain trauma in athletes and its possible connection to ALS and support efforts to treat,... No Auburn player has scored more touchdowns than Williams, who had 46, and he also ranks first in rushing attempts and second in all-purpose yards and rushing yards (behind only the great Bo Jackson) on the Tigers' career lists. Turner had 48 receptions for Alabama's 1989 SEC championship team and 52 for the New England Patriots in 1994. After serving as a captain for the Crimson Tide's 11-1 team in 1991, Turner joined the NFL as a third-round draft pick of the Patriots. Turner spent eight seasons in the NFL with New England and the Philadelphia Eagles, and won the Ed Block Courage Award in 1996. Turner played in 106 NFL games, catching 236 passes for 2,015 yards and 10 touchdowns, rushing 160 times for 635 yards... Source: www.al.com
Petoskey walks-off over Cadillac, finish second in BNC - Petoskey News-Review
“It was a good high school game,” said Serafini. It was really a win-win. “This is the third time we’ve done it and it’s a great event to bring awareness to the community,” Petoskey coach Dave Serafini said. “Cadillac played outstanding defense. In game two, Wagner proved to be the hero, delivering the walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh. The wins also push Petoskey to a 22-10 overall record and 8-2 mark within the Big North, giving them a second place finish behind Alpena’s 10-0 league record. Hosting their third annual Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Purple Game, Tuesday’s matchup also came as senior night and the Northmen’s chance to wrap up a guaranteed second place finish within the BNC. Kurtis Mainland, a 12-year old Petoskey native who battles Cystic Fibrosis, delivered the game’s opening pitch once again, which featured purple jerseys on both sides of the field. PETOSKEY — Though first place in the Big North Conference appeared to be out of reach entering Tuesday, the Petoskey softball team still had plenty left to play for. Emme Williams again earned the win in the circle, allowing five hits and one walk, while striking out seven. Carly Williams had two hits, Lauren Bixby singled, tripled and drove in a run and Megan Anthony also had an RBI single. In the end, Petoskey executed both as planned, with a 4-0 victory in game one and a 2-1 walk-off victory in game two. Wagner then stepped to the plate, delivering the hit Petoskey needed, sending a shot over Cadillac’s outfielders for the game winning run. From the plate, Wagner, Emme Williams, Kiana Wodek and Sarah McCain all had two hits, while Wodek and Wagner also added RBIs. In game one, Emme Williams pitched through a tough first inning, but rebounded with seven strikeouts in the game, while allowing just two hits and two walks. With the game tied at 1-1, Emme Williams singled on and Bixby then singled, sending Williams to third base. Source: www.petoskeynews.com
Cadillac tech 'talks' to traffic lights so you don't run them - Mashable
"There are numerous partnerships required with municipalities to equip appropriate infrastructure," the Cadillac rep told us in an email, referring to the challenge of building a V2I network. Privacy and safety from hackers is a concern for every connected system, but the V2I tech presents another wrinkle with its connection to traffic lights: will drivers wind up triggering an alert every time they accidentally run a red. "Unlike V2V where we can control what our car talks to (other cars we build), V2I requires a lot of partnerships or federal mandates to become viable. V2I is just a test feature in demo CTS cars for now, as GM's Research & Development arm is working with Michigan Department of Transportation and the Macomb Country Department of Roads to develop the tech. The V2I setup uses a similar encryption and privacy system as the V2V tech, which Cadillac reps were quick to highlight in a phone interview with Mashable back in March. There's no timeline for the introduction of the V2I platform in the CTS or any of Cadillac's other cars, but the automaker's reps told us it's "diligently exploring" the possibilities of V2I through the R&D team. According to the automaker, a traffic signal "may be able to say someone ran a red light, but will not be able to say who or what vehicle," because no identifying information is ever transmitted by the car. Cadillac became the first automaker to introduce a V2V system as a standard feature in one of its models — so it's not too far-fetched to imagine the new tech coming to the CTS in the near future. Cadillac tested out the V2I system by rigging two traffic signals near the GM Warren Technical Center campus to send data to its demo CTS vehicles. The V2I test comes after the luxury automaker rolled out a feature to enable vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication back in March , which made its 2017 CTS sedan the first car on the market with the ability to "talk" to other enabled vehicles in... The automaker said the stop lights were able to use Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) protocol — which is the same system used for inter-car V2V communication — to send data to the cars about when the light would turn red.
