Freeport native Delbert Bunker takes over Bocker dealership - Freeport Journal-Standard

she and Bunker have a friendship she holds dear. She is thrilled to be passing the torch to someone who lives in Freeport and has such high hopes and aspirations for the community. The 1989 Freeport High School graduate attended both Highland Community College and Western Illinois University, earning a degree in marketing and finance. He initially thought he might join the ranks of the banking world, but he went to work for dealership owner John Zimmerman the summer after he graduated from college. After all, going from Bocker to Bunker is just two letters. Bunker has spent years dedicating himself to work and committing himself to the city where he was born and raised. He lives by the phrase, “If you’re not going to make this place better, then you’re not being part of the team. “We will still look to grow and build,” Bunker said. Outside work, Bunker has been a coach to his daughters’ Little League and Thunderstix softball teams over the years. “I just want each kid that goes to that school to have a great opportunity,” Bunker said. “They taught me not only how to help manage the car business, but also how to run the store as a family,” he said. “When people come back and you see the smiles on their faces, you know you’ve done something right,” Bunker said. When Riley died in 2003, Mary took over and in 2009, Bunker became a co-owner. "(Bunker) has such a passion for the business," she said. But the feeling after the sale wasn’t nearly as good as when Queckboerner returned to buy another car from Bunker. Bunker hopes the public is proud, too, when they see the local name on the front of the building. Because of online sales, they see buyers from all over the world, but Bunker says their base business is still about 80 percent in their backyard — and many are repeat customers. 1, Delbert Bunker III is the sole owner and operator of the Freeport business. “I never thought I would own a car dealership,” Bunker said. Eventually, Bunker hopes to bring another franchise to Freeport, he said, which is one of the goals he’s set for himself and his team. When Bocker Auto Group bought Zimmerman's in 1997, Bunker started working for owners Riley and Mary Meyers. He also serves as the president of the Freeport Fans Club and as a member of the Freeport Public School Board Foundation, which provides funding for athletics and academics. “I never gave it a thought of going anywhere other than Freeport,” Bunker said. Bunker has worked at Bocker Auto Group on Freeport's southeast side for the past 23 years. FREEPORT — Bocker Chevrolet Buick GMC Cadillac is about to undergo a small name change in a big way.
