McLaren Wants To Make EV That's 'More Exciting To Drive' Than P1 Hypercar - NESN.com
Thumbnail photo via McLaren. Partial autonomy frankly seems like the best way to go for McLaren. We won’t bring an electric McLaren to market until we’ve cracked that challenge. Sensations such as those are important to McLaren because, as Flewitt noted, it’s an entertainment company, not a transportation one. The folks at McLaren Automotive want to make a car that will change people’s perception of electric vehicles, just as the P1 did for hybrids. “We want an EV McLaren that’s more exciting to drive than a P1,” Flewitt said. “I don’t envisage full autonomy for McLaren,” Flewitt said, via Car Design News. While speaking at the Financial Times’ recent Future of the Car Summit, McLaren Automotive CEO Mike Flewitt revealed his company has some pretty lofty goals for its first EV, according to Car Design News. McLaren Says Electric Car Will Be “More Exciting to Drive Than a P1” - RoadandTrack.com
McLaren will make sure its EV lives up before it hits the market. We won’t bring an electric McLaren to market until we’ve cracked that challenge. McLaren helped pioneer the hybrid hypercar, but it's already focused on its next step–an all-electric car. At the same conference, Flewitt noted the role self-driving technology will play in McLaren's future, or rather, the relative lack thereof. As Tesla has proved, it's not difficult to make a ferociously quick electric car , but an EV that provides the same level of enjoyment and dynamic qualities as a true sports car is a much bigger challenge. Keeping weight low will make McLaren's EV feel more like a real sports car. McLaren's EV will have to be damn good (and damn quick) to match the P1, let alone exceed it. Special attention will need to be paid to weight, considering the batteries and electric motors used in EVs are rather heavy. After noting that McLaren is in the business of entertainment, rather than transport, Flewitt said "I don’t envisage full autonomy for McLaren. Last year, an anonymous McLaren source said that the company wanted to make an electric car that's as exciting as a 675LT , but now, McLaren has officially upped the ante. Car Design News reports that, at a recent Financial Times conference, McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt said the company won't release an EV until it's better than the P1. "We want an EV McLaren that’s more exciting to drive than a P1," said Flewitt, per... Source: www.roadandtrack.com
McLaren P1 LM scorches around Nurburgring | Stuff.co.nz - Stuff.co.nz
All five production examples of the P1 LM have been sold to customers in the UK, US, Japan and UAE. The P1 LM is uniquely fitted with a fully exposed carbon fibre roof and additional panels. McLaren has taken its turn at the top of the Nurburgring lap charts, edging out the likes of Lamborghini with a 6 minutes 43. 2 seconds effort around the famed circuit. Technical arguments are sure to follow over which car is really a production vehicle, with the McLaren limited to five examples while only nine EP9's have been constructed, although the company has plans for a second batch. If it feels as though there is a new Nurburgring lap record every week, that's because recent changes to rules at the German circuit allow manufacturers to attempt record lap times - a practice that was banned following the death of a spectator... In 2016, a McLaren P1 LM set the fastest time for a road-legal car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed's hillclimb. The LM is 60kg lighter than even the P1 GTR due to the removal of race parts such as the air-jack system, the use of lightweight seats replicated from the original F1 GTR, the Inconel exhaust and titanium tailpipes, lightweight fabricated charge... Lamborghini's Huracan Performante set a bench mark production car time of 6:52. 01 earlier this year which was still slower than the bespoke Radical SR8LM's time of 6:48 set in 2009. However, in May electric supercar, the Nio EP9, smashed both...
